What is this delay actually costing?
A late filing costs two separate things: a fixed late fee that runs per day until you file, and interest on any tax you were holding. Enter your dates below and this shows both, how the figure was arrived at, and what each further day adds.
Which return is late?
What is your turnover?
This sets the maximum the late fee can reach for this return.
Income tax return filed after the due date
The fee under section 234F is fixed, not per day. Interest under 234A runs per month on tax still unpaid.

What people ask about late fees
-
QWhat about the annual return, GSTR-9?
Deliberately not in this calculator. The annual return's late fee was rationalised by turnover and its ceiling is a percentage of your state turnover rather than a flat figure, so a single number here would be wrong for most people. Send us the period and the turnover and we will work out the actual exposure.
-
QDoes the late fee keep growing until I file?
Yes, the per-day fee runs from the day after the due date until the return is actually filed, but it stops at a cap that depends on your turnover and the return. Interest on unpaid tax does not have that cap — it runs until the tax is paid.
-
QIs interest charged on the whole tax or only what I pay in cash?
Interest is on the net liability settled in cash. Tax offset against input tax credit sitting in your ledger is treated differently, which is one of the commonest reasons a self-calculated figure and the portal's figure disagree.
-
QThe portal shows a different number to this tool. Which is right?
The portal. This is an estimate built to give you the order of magnitude and show the working before you log in. Where they differ it is usually the cap, the credit position or an interest period counted differently — send us both figures and we will tell you which applies.

QCan a late fee be waived?
Amnesty schemes have waived or reduced late fees for specific periods and return types in the past, and they come and go by notification. If you have several periods outstanding it is worth asking before you pay — that is a conversation, not a calculator.
Several periods outstanding?
Where more than one return is late the order you file them in changes what you pay. Bring the list and we will work out the cheapest way through it.
